Cheapest custom-domain email that still does IMAP

Late 2026 reality check: which hosts still give you a real mailbox on [email protected] over IMAP—and what the sticker price hides about send/receive caps. Prices below are copied from vendor pages we opened on 6 Nov 2026. This is not legal, tax or migration advice.

1. Why IMAP still matters (demand, not testimonials)

People hunting for custom-domain mail keep asking the same practical question on public threads: which host is cheap and still works in Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Outlook, or the Gmail mobile app over standard protocols—not web-only.

2. How we scored “cheapest that still does IMAP”

  1. IMAP must be documented by the vendor If the pricing or help page does not clearly state IMAP (or third-party IMAP/SMTP client access), we mark it unverified—not a yes.
  2. Starting price as shown on the vendor page We use the lowest published entry figure that still includes custom-domain mail + IMAP. Taxes, promos and regional lists can differ; prefer the vendor page if anything conflicts.
  3. Free without IMAP is not a win for this page Zoho Mail Free is $0 but the Free row states IMAP/POP/ActiveSync are not included—so it cannot win a “still does IMAP” comparison.
  4. Call out receive/send meters Cheapest dollars can still bounce or defer mail after caps. Cite vendor limit text where we found it.

3. 2026 comparison table (checked Nov 2026)

Figures and feature notes were read from the linked pages on 6 Nov 2026. Billing unit = how the vendor prices the plan. “IMAP?” = yes only when a fetched vendor page says so.

Bottom line from this table: among hosts with a clear IMAP yes and a published entry price we fetched on 6 Nov 2026, Purelymail at $10/year is the lowest flat yearly figure. Closest paid IMAP runners-up on sticker price: Zoho Mail Lite at US$1/user/mo yearly (~US$12/user/year estimate), iCloud+ from US $0.99/mo if you already want Apple storage, then Migadu Micro at $19/year.

4. Cheapest $ can still drop mail — read the meters

Price alone is a bad ranking if incoming mail vanishes when you spike. Evidence and vendor text:

We did not independently load-test any provider. Limit behavior is quoted from the pages linked above.

5. Provider notes (only what the pages say)

Purelymail — lowest flat yearly IMAP figure we found

Simple pricing is $10 a year. Features state IMAP and POP3 (with IMAP IDLE), SMTP, custom domains at no extra charge, and catch-all routing. Homepage also states “Retrieve mail with IMAP or POP3.” Advanced pricing exists if soft limits are exceeded.

Zoho Mail — free is web/app-only; Lite adds IMAP

The Free row on Zoho Mail pricing explicitly says IMAP/POP/ActiveSync are not included. Zoho’s compare overview answers “Does Zoho Mail work with Outlook and Apple Mail?” with: on any paid plan, yes—IMAP, POP, and ActiveSync; free plan is webmail and mobile apps only. USD list for Mail Lite 5 GB: US$1 per user per month, yearly subscription only.

Migadu Micro — cheap flat rate with hard daily meters

Micro is $19/year with unlimited addresses and soft 5 GB storage. Support publishes IMAP at imap.migadu.com:993. Watch the daily in/out caps before picking Micro for a busy shared inbox.

Fastmail — IMAP yes on Individual/Standard; not on Basic

Individual is $5/mo when paying yearly ($60/12 months) and lists custom domains plus third-party apps. Server names and ports documents IMAP and states Basic plans do not include IMAP/SMTP.

Proton Mail Plus — IMAP through Bridge

Mail Plus shows $3.99/mo on the 12-month offer ($47.88/year), 1 custom domain, catch-all, and “Email client support (via IMAP/SMTP)” on paid rows. Proton Mail Bridge creates a local IMAP/SMTP endpoint for desktop clients on a paid plan—plan for a machine that can run Bridge if you need classic IMAP.

iCloud+ — IMAP for iCloud Mail; domain limits

iCloud+ plans include Custom Email Domain on every tier (US 50 GB from $0.99/mo). Support 102540: up to five domains, 10 addresses each. Support 102525: iCloud Mail uses IMAP and SMTP; no POP. Best fit if you already live in Apple Mail / Family Sharing—not a generic “any client, any OS” pitch beyond what Apple documents.

Google Workspace — contrast, not the cheap IMAP winner

Business Starter listed $7 / user / month (USD) when we fetched the page on 6 Nov 2026, with time-limited intro discounts also shown. Google’s Gmail help page points people who need a custom domain in Gmail long term toward Workspace. We mark IMAP on this row as “verify in Google docs” because the marketing pricing page did not print the word IMAP in the content we captured.
